Having left Seattle for sunnier weather, I am looking to find a small batch coffee roaster to buy my beans from in San Diego. Anyone have any suggestions.

My favorites in other places are Vivace and Zoka in Seattle and Stumptown in Portland.

I'm certainly not a coffee expert, and I don't know what constitutes a "small batch", but I believe Pannikin Coffee and Tea roasts their own. There are several locations throughout the county - google "Pannikin San Diego" to find out more.

This company is only selling coffee through it's online site, but it's a San Diego based company:

Excellent beans and definitely roasted in small batches.

Pannikin does roast their own beans - the store/roasting plant is downtown on G Street. This is also my favorite place to buy coffee.

The La Costa Coffee Roasting in Carlsbad roasts their own beans and has a great selection. It's a great place for just kicking back too. It is located in the shopping center at the corner of Aviara and El Camino Real

I think Caffe Calabria on 30th (near University Ave.) in North Park roasts their own coffee. Cafe Moto (PB?) may too.

Love Zoka coffee, you can always order on line and have them ship it down.

That's true; they roast it right there in the back of their cafe. We have bought several lbs and it has always been excellent. It is a nice place cafe as well, with free wireless and very good espresso.

Amongst the local roasters I've had good results with Caffe Calabria in North Park and The Pannikin.

Note that in the past The Pannikin stores have sourced their roasted beans from Cafe Moto, which I believe may have run the stores at the time, but now they are all individually owned and operated. I do know that the Leucadia, Del Mar, and La Jolla stores are owned and operated by the same couple, and they have setup their own roasting operation in their Leucadia store. My favorite roast from Moto, (that is before I began to home-roast), was their Indo Noir, well-suited to either espresso or a brewed cup. In fact it's been the only roast of theirs that I've consistently liked.

A while ago when I was in-between an upgrade in home-roasters I temporarily switched back to pre-roasted beans. It was then that I found out that the Leucadia Pannikin was roasting their own and had duplicated the Indo Noir blend; to my palate it's the same taste profile as what I used to get from Moto's own version.

Speaking of small batches, the downtown Pannikin branch roasts outside on their sidewalk in a small 1 pound sample roaster. Personally I find it very strange (ridiculous?) to be roasting in such a small quantity solely for retail coffee bean sales. I'm aware of 1 pound roasters specifically marketed for the food service industry to support very low volumes, or sample roasters used to cup coffees, but it's hard to imagine such a capacity suiting retail sales where customers will buy 1 pound bags of coffee at a time. But since you're looking for small batches, that's about as small as they get before getting into the province of the the home-roaster (usually 2-10 oz. batches).

I've tried La Costa Coffee Roasters several times, but have always been disappointed in their roasts. When I did buy my roasts off-the-shelf, I only went there as a last resort.

BTW if you are an espresso/ristretto fanatic and believe in robusta as part of an espresso blend (as I do!), I have not found a single operation in San Diego that uses robusta's in their espresso blends. For that I end-up ordering my green beans from Vivace/Josuma/Sweet Maria's/etc...
