Table for one in Midtown

I'm going to be in the city next week on a short business trip. I'll have one night to explore and eat. Can you recommend a place in midtown that won't make my boss cringe when he gets a hold of my expense report(<$50 without liquor)?

I really enjoy all types of food. The more single-diner friendly, the better.

Thanks in advance,

  1. In terms of single dining, I usually like the sushi bars. Although I can easily spend quite a bit of $$$ there, you can keep the costs decent if you know what you want and are willing to exercise some self control (something I'm not so good at). There are a lot of quality places in midtown, but one I like is Sushi Ann (formerly Sushisay) which is on 51st just east of Madison.

    1. I think a great option pricewise with great quality of food is Houston's. Yes, it is a chain, and I'm normally blah about chains, but Houston's has great American dishes. I can't help but like it. You can eat from the full menu at the big bar.... yum!

      3rd Ave at E 53rd street.

      1. Thank you for your replies. I hadn't thought about sushi, even though I love it. And it's very single-diner friendly..there always seems to be a single seat at the sushi bar.

Diana - you don't know how many times I've had dinner at the Houston's bar. Travelling solo can be for the birds. :)

I was also looking at La Madeline from another thread. It's not exactly down the street from my hotel, but it's not too far.
