Fabulous birthday cakes for $25 or under?

Searching for a bakery that sells good-to-great $25 birthday cakes that can feed 7. Any suggestions?

I'll throw in Black Hound. Their cakes are around $26, I believe, though prices may have gone up one or two dollars. But very rich stuff, not really like a conventional spongy cake.

I also just got a great cake from Billy's at Easter time. We got pink buttercream frosting on top with pastel polka dots. Very springlike- it was awesome!

You could probably find something at Billy's, Amy's, or Little Pie Company that would fit within your budget and be delicious.

sugar sweet sunshine is one of my favorite bakeries, and they have a 7 inch two layer cake for $22.

Billy's Bakery in chelsea makes a fantastic cake. Their two layer, 8 inch would feed 7 people comfertably. It's a little over your price point @ $28, but it's also a REALLY great cake w/ buttercream frosting that's perfect for birthday's.

Unfortunately, your budget would yield you a tiny cake, I'm thinking 6", but that small size should give you enough servings if quite small.

If I were in your shoes, I would probably head down to Umanoff&Parsons (http://www.umanoffparsons.com ) and get one of their ready-made cakes. (Their custom birthday cakes are beyond your budget.) They mostly wholesale, including to Fairway and FreshDirect, but they have a retail store at their factory in Tribeca. Quality is good but not mind-blowing -- sorry, I don't know anywhere that will get you mind-blowing for under $25.

Your other alternative is a half sheetcake at Costco. It was named in the Saveur100 as a fantastic cake and a good bargain. Also, you can get an assortment of cupcakes from the various cupcake emporiums in the city (I like Buttercup). Good luck.
