Knife Shopping in Manhattan

I'm ready to purchse a new knife. I'm leaning towards a Henkels 8 inch chef's, but where is the best spot to head towards for price and selection. I definitely want to handle a wide variety first. What's been everyone's best price?

I bought my 8" Sabatier chef's knife at Bridge Kitchenware back in the late seventies, heeding the matchless advice of the late Fred Bridge. Sabatier really was Sabatier then.

I'm not so much recommending this particular knife as I am saying that you can't go wrong at Bridge. Their advice is worthwhile.

Zaber's, though, will always be cheaper.

I went shopping around for a full set of Global knives. I went to the stores & figured out which knives I wanted, I did a bit of 'googling' & was able to find the knives online at a substantial discount. I got free shipping & a free paring knife with my order from www.cutleryandmore.com - good luck!

Thank you everyone. I had success yesterday.
I started out at Korin, a beautiful and inspiring store but prices are high. I took some notes, something called a Mantuko (sp?) for $103 + 15% discount, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted... (I have tang-metal-cutting-my-index-finger issues).
So I moved on up to J.P. Prince, where I amazingly found the most comfortable 8 in. knife for me at only $25,(can't recall the make right now but it has a big rubber handle). The Henckels there did not have the new ergonomic handel I was looking for. They did have good ballon and sauce whisks though. Very nice store and I'll be back again. Prices are reasonable (for the quality).
As I left I remembered a Macy's gift card that's been in my wallet since Christmas so I headed over to the Cellar and, to my surprise, found exactly what I wanted, Henckels Santoko with THE handel!

My BF cooks professionally and usually does well at Korin in Tribeca. They're having a sale through the month of July.

All good advice. I'd go for a 6-inch chef's knife rather than an 8 inch, unless you're hands are really big.

I could not disagree more. Even the smallest hands can handle an 8 inch knife. A 6" knife is so small that it can barely tackle many jobs in the kitchen.

After using an 8" knife for a while you'll wish you had a 10".

I've long had a 6" Henkel and was given an 8" Henkel. I always reach for the 6" and I do not have small hands. ymmv

According to the chef who teaches the knife skills class at ICE....the bigger the better. But for my personal taste, I like a 6 or 7 inch knife. The 9 inch I have now is just too unwieldy.

I've always appreciated the excellent customer service and knowledgeable salespeople at JB Prince (www.jbprince.com).

Zabar's upstairs is unbeatable both in terms of huge selection and excellent prices...all kinds of cooking equipment up there, a real paradise!

Yes, the prices at Zabar's tend to be better than at many retail shops around the city. They have a decent selection, as well.

I bought my most recent knife at WS b/c I had a gift certificate, but I'd recommend checking out Bridge Kitchenware and Broadway Panhandler.
