Nakama (sushi) in Pittsburgh: Recommended.

Just came back from a visit to Nakama on the South Side in Pittsburgh. I was very impressed. My meal included:

1 Hawaiian Roll (shrimp tempura wrapped with unagi, scallions, and avocado, topped with spicy tuna, teriyaki sauce, and a thin white sauce I couldn't identify
)4 pieces sake (salmon)
2 pieces unagi (freshwater eel)
6 pieces spicy tuna maki

The spicy tuna roll was the only dud; the fish was slightly dry, and it was chopped too finely.

The Hawaiian Roll was outstanding. Yes, it's gimmicky sushi, but it combined all of my favorite sushi items except salmon into one roll.

The salmon was farmed, but very fresh. The unagi was good as well, although it's hard to screw that one up.

Those items plus a house salad (pretty good sized) came to $36 before tip.

  1. My girlfriend and I ate there last weekend and loved it! We didn't try the Hawaiian Roll, which I regretted once I saw it. We ordered a sampler with spicy tuna (which was OK) and 3 pieces of nigri (salmon, tuna, and whitefish). This was, hands down, the best nigri I have EVER had. Like butter.
