I have been reading with mouth watering about the literally hundreds of varieties of mangoes from India that will soon be available for import into the U.S. thanks to the new trade pact between the U.S. and India (Mangoes for Nukes). Indians have been cultivating unique varieties for centuries. They must be wonderful.
Apparently the mangoes are ripe and unleashed on the streets of New Delhi! Does anyone know where any can be had in NYC or thereabouts?
I'd wager an educated guess that Patel Brothers on 74th St in Jackson Heights (Queens) would be a fertile hunting ground. Hop the 7 or E train to 74th St, its only like 15 minutes outside of Manhattan.
Plus you can usually run into a street vendor that will sell you a whole manngo, cut up, with lime juice for a buck.
yes, most of the indian grocers carry delicious mangoes. there is one on 1st ave as well, i think somewhere around 3rd-10th street (i can't remember!) that has good ones. but actually, the mango lady on the corner of university and 14th street always has excellent and sweet mangoes. with salt, hot sauce, etc. $2 for a carved mango on a stick, $2.50 for a box of cut up mango.
