HI--I'll be visiting Houston and need advice on great food near the Medical Center: especially BBQ, Brisket, Mexican, and Tex-Mex.

We leave Sunday morning, July 9, so speed is of the essence!

Thanks for helping out this newbie to Chowhound, and to Houston.

You won't be far from the Rice Village area, and there are a great many good restaurants of several varieties there. A little north of there, Goode Company on Kirby is a reliable old standby for good barbecue; Goode Company Taqueria across the street has great burgers and some good Tex-Mex (try the grilled catfish, it makes great tacos with the accompanying tortillas and refrieds), and Goode Company Seafood around the corner from there has excellent shrimp. There have been a couple of threads on this topic and I'll try to find them; haven't tried to search since the new site went up...
