Canned breadfruit nuts

Yesterday I wandered into a local grocery store that carries Spanish/Tropical/African goods. I bought a number of goodies I recognized and one I didn't - the proprietor's English wasn't great, while my Haitian is non-existant, so while he tried to help me, we mostly just smiled and nodded a lot.

Has anyone here ever used canned breadfruit nuts? What do I do with them? A quick google search yielded some nutritional info, a washington post note that right out of the can they don't taste very good, and a travelogue about how they taste like a cross between potatoes and peanuts.

Any hints? Thanks!

Reviving an old post because I just fell into this same trap. Saw 'em, wanted 'em, now I don't know what to do with 'em. Unless someone comes up with a better idea in the next 24 hours, I'm gonna sautee 'em with some spinach or rapini and eat 'em. Whether I like them or not, I refuse to waste food or miss a new taste sensation. I would just prefer to eat them in the manner to which they are best suited. Any and all ideas are appreciated.

They are alot like chestnuts. You can boil (in very salty water) or roast them. Then remove the shell and pop em in your mouth. Delicious. I've only worked with fresh breadfruit nuts. Never canned. How did they turn out for you?

Thanks, ctgarcialeon! I drained the can and boiled them for about 10 minutes in salty water and they came out really good. If I ever see fresh breadfruit nuts I'll buy them and compare the difference. I wonder where one would ever find them fresh?

Nope, they really are breadfruit nuts. It's a Goya can, and I've not yet had the guts to try them. I'll keep you posted.

Is it a breadfruit nut, or a breadnut fruit? This may seem like semantics, but breadfruit and breadnut are two different things. Here is a link to some info about the breadnut, also called Ramon, including a picture of it:

Does the can list where it was packaged? What is the brand name? I'm very curious.
