BEARD PAPAS cream puffs on Sawtelle

Hi everyone,
I was there on opening day, last Saturday. They only had the vanilla cream puffs and none of their other specialties yet, including their molten chocolate cake. Does anyone know if they've expanded their menu yet? Thanks!

      Very tasty, and when I went there was no line. I especially like that they fill the cream puffs when you order them, so the room temperature puffs contrast very nicely with the chilled custard filling.

        Hi, Cupcake! I remember that you posted last week, and I feel your excitement for this place...great Chow spirit!!!!
        When I visited another one of their stores, I was able to order just a plastic cup of filling...well chilled and delicious! I hope they offer this as an option as well!

          I asked today if I could just buy custard, and the two ladies working the counter both apologetically said no. Very sad. But maybe if they get more requests and hear that other branches do it they'll start too!

            Pei - hi!
            I didn't make a special request for this. It was one of their "menu" offerings, and there were other customers enjoying the same. So, I am hopeful that it WILL eventually become available at their Sawtelle shop.

    2. I went last night, right after official closing time, although they still had people sitting at the tables. They still only had one kind of cream puff - which should have come with eating directions. I took one bite and the filling splooged out from all sides! Delicious, but messy.

      Strange set up, with Mousse Fantasy's case on the left of the door and Beard Papa's straight ahead as you walk in. I always thought of Mousse Fantasy as a place to go hang out and Beard Papa seems to be a take away operation. Not sure how that will play out...

        wait a second, is mousse fantasy, stilla round? if it is,k that's a relief. so they are both there together in the same storefront?

          Yup. They are sharing the space now. I don't know if Mousse Fantasy still has its lunch/savory options though... but their pastry case has been moved intact to the left side of the space.

        1. I went on Sunday and noticed the old Mousse Fantasy menu on the counter. Seems they still have at least some of their main dishes. One thing though, there's less room for tables. Most tables are now outside, along the walkway which can make for awkward dining. =P

          1. Think they like to "introduce" you to the standard vanilla custard then in a couple weeks they'll bring on another flavor most likely chocolate. Don't get the coffee custard, it was horrible.

              The chocolate is fantastic though. And the green tea is interesting.

              1. Being in SGV, I go to the one in Rowland Heights -- the eclairs (basically puffs with chocolate on top) are really good!

                Hope you enjoy when it debuts.

                1. Where is the Rowland Heights location, I gotta get some of those little beauties for the Mrs. (and maybe just one or two for me).

                      Oh no! You mean we will have to go SHOPPING?!?! I was hoping we could just park and run in to a Beard Papa shop in maybe a strip center, instead I will be subject to shopping hell...

                      Well, it might be worth it, once, just for a taste. A hell of a better alternative than the Krispy Kreme over there.

                      I do believe Beard Papa started out in Japan before expanding here... ;)

                      Beard Papa's choux cream are so delicious.
                      I was completely addicted since spring, buying them over and over in all their flavor iterations by the dozen in those cutesy boxes.
                      But... I got tired of 'em. Far East Krispy Kremes overkill?
                      I've gone back to those mini puffs from Mitsuwa and Nijiya again
                      despite their utter unhipness.

                      1. I tried a "swirl" -- half chocolate cream and half green tea cream...yum! They were very nice when I requested this...a "why not" attitude!

                        I know Cupcake is waiting and waiting and waiting for their chocolate cake delicacy. I asked at the Sawtelle store and they told me "next week." This might just mean soon, but I know you won't be too put-out to just keep checking -- and while you're there, try the combo "swirl!"
