Many years ago I ate at a place called "Smugglers". It's a distant memory, but I think it was good; I have no idea if it is still in existence.

one of the best burgers in town is in a steak/chop house, with great atmosphere and booze AND it's smoke free-

      It's Buchanan's, 738 3rd Ave SW, 403-261-4646

Can't argue with Buchanan's for a great burger. Possibly the best in town! They also have an outstanding selection of Scotch for after the meal. If it's tradition you're looking for I have to suggest Hy's. They've got a great steak and are a Calgary institution.

The best old style (Dark ambience, leather chairs etc.) steakhouse in town is Caeser's downtown location. Having said that you can't go wrong with Buchanan's.

Caeser's for sure - if good steak is what you are looking for. And if it is a guys night our then Caeser's is even better as the lounge is like a men's club!

Hy's is a chain, so that doesnt meet your criteria. If it's pure steaks, Caesars is the place - especially for the authentic part (well, authentic 70's Italian mafia, but it's kitschy).

A better combination of burgers and steaks (probably the best burgers in town) is Buchanan's, who's steaks arent too shabby either. The bar side is more comfortable than the "fine dining" side, which is a white linen kind of place. Better for beers too.
