RW Cafe Boulud, GT, or Gotham for lunch?
Bringing mom and sister for lunch. With priorities being food, space, experience.....which option (Cafe Boulud, GT, or Gotham) would be best for RW lunch? Or is the "regular" prix-fixe at those spots better?
And is Cafe Boulud super dressy at lunch?
Many many thanks to this board.
I've been to Gramercy Tavern during Restaurant Week and it was very good indeed. (I think the place is overrated, but that's another story. They give you as good a meal as the full-priced menu.) You must reserve in advance.
In past years, Cafe Boulud has offered a $20 lunch through the summer. It's wonderful and a great bargain. Yes, people come in baggy jeans, but you will be treated much better if you dress well. I wear a navy blazer and tie.
My experience with Gramercy Tavern was not during RW. I had their tasting menu for lunch and the food was good. Their service was very attentive and the space looks like an upscale tavern. When it came to people, it varied from teenagers dressed in baggy jeans and t-shirts to business lunchers.
When it came to Cafe Boulud, I agree with Boswell (the previous poster). I did went there for RW and I did not like it very much. The food was ok and their service could be better. If I had a choice, I wouldn't go back there again for RW.
For a RW experience that I liked was at Fleur de Sel. Good food and service was attentive. The diners ranged from trendy, young women who are having a lunch break from shopping to business lunchers.
I had a RW lunch at Cafe Boulud last time. It was ok, but not an outstanding RW experience. It was a bit of a mob scene, lots of people standing in the entrance waiting to be seated. Dress ran the gamut from jeans to suits (one sensed that the jeans crowd didn't normally eat here). The food was very well prepared, but the menu seemed a little dumbed down (small portions, inexpensive ingredients), so it didn't really give a good idea of what the kitchen was capable of. This was less true of my last RW at DB Bistro Moderne...that was excellent.
I love Cafe Boulud. To the best of my knowledge, there is no lunch prix-fixe year round, only a la carte. I do not do RW, so I can't give you an opinion about their RW menu. We've only had dinner there and, while many gentlemen do wear jackets, there is no requirement to do so. The women tend to dress quite stylishly, but definitely not "to the nines."
It's been ages since I had the regular lunch prix-fixe at Gotham, but it sticks in my memory as having been excellent.
