looking for a paticular chinese pancake

i had this years ago.. and it's not a typical chinese pancake flat and thin layers... well it's the same until there but this one was like one long flat stringlike pancake that swirled into a circle just like the regular pancakes.. and there were the fine thin layers within that string.. am i totally not making sense? i used to have it at the chinese restaurant right next to cathay's bakery on las tunas.. the restaurant is now a shabu shabu/ sushi place.. someone help me please!

Was it called jua bing (literally, "grab cake/cookie")?

You can find it in the freezer section of 99 Ranch and other chinese markets sometimes. I've only ever seen it with some scallions scattered throughout.

Thanks, I was groping for that name (I think it's actually "zhua bing" in pinyin).

Yes, it is. I have terrible pinyin, thanks to years of Taiwanese zhuyin and Wade Giles indoctriconfusion.

If it is "zhua bing" you are looking for, try HAPPY FAMILY (the Veggie restaurant) or LU'S GARDEN or even DING'S GARDEN (although they don't always have them). Another place to try is DUMPLING MASTER.

I think your talking of a panacake that is made with pastry dough and yes, layed. It often has onion and carrot incorporated. Korean cuisine has something similar. I have bought at Han Kook Korean markets and even at 99 Ranch. Have you looked there? If you're in the valley, there's a Korean market at Sherman Way and White Oak or Devonshire and Reseda. 99 ranch is Sepulveda and Victory. But, there's 99 Ranch Markets all over L.A. and O.C. I think Han Kook sold out and the markets have a different name. Even the Viet restaurants have it's version. Try the respective villages around L.A. :)kq
