Kolbeh of Kabob, Soulfire, Gene's Seafood
I took advantage of a bachelor weekend to try a few places gleaned from this board and overall ate very well. Lunch at Kolbeh of Kabob (Cambridge Street in Cambridge) was an amazingly overstuffed ground sirloin wrap on homemade pita ($5.75). It's the best persian sandwich that i've had in the US. The grill man takes great care fanning his coals and the spicing was excellent, but the highlight was the pita taken fresh from the oven seconds before the sandwich was assembled. The platters of saffron rice and roast tomato with grilled meat or stew looked great but more than i could eat for lunch. I tried Soulfire based on favorable reviews from Garylovesfood and others, and was impressed. The ribs $12 for a half rack) had mild smokiness, good bark, smoke ring and a good meaty texture. The sauces are house-made and are complex with some depth to the spiciness. The sides are good with the collards being the highlight. All in all, a good deal and excellent addition to the BBQ scene. After a beach trip with the dog, I stopped at Gene's in Fairhaven, a local institution. In lieu of my usual fried clams, I got a box of fried scallops and a couple of clam cakes. The frying here is well done and the scallops were huge and fresh (though they could have been sweeter). Clam cakes were yummy balls of crispy dough whose clam content were merely a suggestion. Overall, the place hit the spot fulfilling the beach-fried food instinct.
