On Sat evening my SO and I, normally east-side dwellers, found ourselves on the west side of the city and with a rumble in our tummies.
Encouraged by a recent review in The Star, we decided to make our way to Torito. We were very pleased we did.
We arrived just before 7 p.m. we were greeted with a friendly smile, my umbrella was taken and placed in a holder to dry and we were offered our choice of places to sit.
The menu is brief but well thought out. We started with the bread, fresh cheese with spicy olives, pickled pearl onions and pickles – a steal at $3.
We had selected the green beans but that evening they were out. Instead we had the asparagus. Blanched perfectly with a nice cool crisp bite, they were topped with a lovely red pepper relish of sorts.
Our first hot dish was the most heavenly five shrimp we’ve had in a long time. They were cooked to perfection. The paprika sauce complimented but didn’t over power the fresh flesh of the plumb and juicy shrimps.
Our next hot dish was the quail served with a tangy pomegranate sauce with a side of mashed squash. Yummy, yummy, yummy. I wish we would have each gotten our own.
Our final dish was grilled king fish. I’ve never had king fish before so I have nothing to compare it to. However, it was a nice meaty white fish with a mild flavour. It was served with a onion and pepper relish. I really enjoyed the flavour of the fish but I think it could have been cooked a little less.
We decided to have dessert as well. My SO had the chocolate flan and enjoyed it immensely. I had the pineapple gratin. Let’s just say the gratin was not so great. Really it was the only disappointing dish of the evening.
Including all of the dishes above, four cranberry and sodas, one espresso and one cappuccino our total bill before tip was $85.
All in all it was a very good evening of great food, friendly service, in a comfortable environment. I know we’ll be back.
i think it's a slightly changing for availability and just quite a long menu. i recognize most of the mains to be from the menu of an experience i had about two months ago but we didn't order the same things. i do not completely recall the greenbeans or the asparagus but they're in season in TO right now so i'm not surprised they were on the menu. my own gratin was apple rather than pineapple and similar in that it was rather unimpressive.
