In Vancouver virtually all the dim sum is off the menu, largely due to the space that is required to navigate carts. Most of the upscale new dim sum palaces in Los Angeles are also using the menu system, apparently following this Vancouver (and Hong Kong) trend. However, I don't think any existing dim sum restaurants in Los Angeles are converting, so those who prefer cart service can count on their old standbys.

Thanks, we went to Happy Harbour and were quit pleased. This was our first experience with off the menu Dim Sum save for the limited Dim Sum menu at S.W. in Irvine where we've ordered from to supplement the regular menu. It's a little off setting at 1st but, when the food comes, it's all good. We followed it up with a trip to Beard Papa's in the near by mall which was really our reason for being in the area to begin with. It was a really nice duo.
Is the menu Dim Sum a fad or is it in order to seat more people by eliminating the need for aisles for the carts?

I concur, Happy Harbour (which used to be Sea Harbour) is good -- the chefs I hear are the same. Have heard good things about New Capital too.

The best place I've found in terms of price and quality is New Capital on Nogales in Life Plaza. Their stuff is hot, tasty, and they still use carts (if that's important to you).
Everything is $1.80 if you go on the weekdays and $1.90 if you go on the weekends. At least it was last time I went...
