When I worked in a restaurant we got our chips in bulk cases (24#) from Lazzari - don't know if they will sell direct to an individual. They are in Brisbane. Here is their website: http://www.lazzari.com/about_page04.html

Yimster,

Just go to Lazzari on Bayshore at Industrial near the San Francisco-Brisbane border. Drive into their yard and go up the rickety stairs in the warehouse. They'll sell you chips, firewood, wood chunks, lump mesquite charcoal, or excellent hardwood charcoal briquettes at very low prices.

Make sure whatever you buy is hardwood. I do a lot of smoking with sawdust, but the company I deal with also has a wide selection of chips and chunks in various flavors. The price is right, shipping free, service excellent.
