That awful flash map

mmerino Jul 1, 2006 04:24 PM

Now I am really irritated. I was annoyed this week but now I have experienced a truly unusable "feature." That silly animated map that pushes what you were intending to select right off the bottom of the browser when it animates. Ouch!

PLEASE, please, allow users to select either the list or map, don't force us to scroll b/c a web designer thought it would be good to do animation. Same thing with the scrolling over the "Boards" link when users are posting, like I am now. Don't dynamically push my content down.

Totally agree. The map, the rollovers, all whizzy, web designer silliness. I don't want a menu to disappear because I rolled my mouse 1/4" to the right.

I did complain about the map. So I'll add my name to the chorus here.

(And yet again I can't reply to the OP. This inability to reply seem to come and go. Very frustrating.)

I agree. I've been meaning to complain about the map. I would guess most users would be happier selecting from a list.

If you don't like the flash map, then just don't use it. There's three different ways to navigate between the boards on this site.

You missed my point entirely. Its not that an interactive map is bad per-se, its the fact that the content moves around as it loads. Keep the content stationary.

I don't have a choice, I load the boards and the map over rides it. I can deal with one or the other and prefer no map but select one please.

The problem is that I am about to not use it when it pushes the text-based guide out from under my mouse!

Love the easy access to the boards though.

It shouldn't be doing that, we'll take a look. Thanks for the heads up.

I avoid that by not clicking on Boards in the navigation bar, I just hover my mouse over it, and the list, without the map, displays and I can then move my cursor down and click on the specific board I want. The downside, is that the entire list is too long to display that way, so if I need to get to a board that is listed near the bottom, I have to indure that map displaying.

Is there a reason why the US is called North America?? Isn't that a bit insulting to the rest of the continent of North America (Canada and the misplaced Mexico)?

I don't know if it's insulting, but it's certainly wrong.

For a site that often seems obsessed with geography, I'm surprised that they missed that one.

And Asia apparently has invaded Europe, shades of Ghingis Khan.

IMO the map is a silly, unnecessary thing that only a web designer geek could love. One of those things I file under "Just because you can doesn't mean you have to.

I came here to complain about this very thing. It's extremely annoying to click on the "boards" button, have the text-based list appear, then as I start to move my mouse down that damn map pops up and shoves the list away.

                      Highly irritating.

Hubby was cursing about the map. Hot posts solved the problem. We never use the board tab anymore.

The problem is that the tabs don’t work in the same way. The board and getting started tabs have hovering for drop down menus. The other tabs need to be clicked. Hubby would always forget and click on the board tab. He hated getting that map.

I noticed that you can't actually click on Asia.

Also, Alaska belongs to no country or continent.

Click on South America, the errors just multiply. The category becomes Central/South America, yet Mexico is listed. They call it the North American Free Trade Agreement for a reason.

It took me a few days to figure out that clicking "boards" brings up the map, but just mousing over it, brings the list of boards sans map onto the current page. Slick but not at all intuitive. Maybe the map should go away entirely, or be triggered by something that requires more intent.

                            The Flash map sucks. Seriously.

It's strange you'd build a semantically correct, table-free site and then stick Flash in it. Totally pointless. The list is far easier to navigate.

It doesn't matter how slick you think it is - as a UI component it's a failure.

I wouldn't be surprised if the people using it are overwhelmingly (1) first-time visitors who aren't yet going straight to a bookmarked favorite section of the site and (2) frustrated people who haven't yet figured out that rolling over the "Boards" link withoutt clicking will cause a board list to appear sans map.

The map would probably be best left as a "home" jumping-off page to the boards that new visitors start at. Otherwise, even for people with older or non-Javascript-enabled browsers, I think a "Boards" page without the map would be preferable, and that the map could slide out from an unobtrusive side tab for those who want it.

I just discovered a few minutes ago that if you click directly on a link to a board from one of the "latest posts" that appear when you first come to the site, you will (of course) go straight to that board, and after that you can click on Boards and go back and forth between the Boards link and various boards without that map popping up.
