Tri Tip in the NY Metro area: Trader Joe's
I've been meaning to pass this on for months, but just keep forgetting... until now. For any of you who have experienced tri tip roast/steak, you know just how great it is - particularly grilled over charcoal. It's a staple out West, where - particularly in California - is it is BBQ religion. Anyhow, out here, I've never, ever been able to find it. Ask a butcher and he'll just look at you funny.
Anyhow, a few months ago, my brother said you can get tri tip at any Trader Joe's. Sure enough, I checked the one in Darien, CT and there it was, in a cryovac package. They have a premarinated and a non marinated. Definitely go for the non marinated. It's $5.99 a pound and just incredibly worth it. When grilled to medium rare, it truly is wonderful. Superb. Lovely. Splendid... I could go on. Anyhow, if the trader joes in Darien carries it, chances are all the others do too.
