Favorite hot dog/hamburger stand between Hartford and the Rhode Island border?

I'll be heading along Route 6 or 44 between Rhode Island and Hartford this weekend, and would love to find an old-fashioned drive-in, truck stop, or food stand that has good hamburgers and hot dogs. Any suggestions? Thanks!

(Nearly one year later, Hee Hee)....we ended up going to the Traveler Restaurant in Union that day, after considering the Vanilla Bean Cafe in Pomfret as well as a few others.

I do want to get to Shady Glen one of these days. It looks like a classic spot.

I drive the road every couple of weeks because my son lives in Providence...there is really nothing...Shady Glen in Manchester is the only option...

...if you are desperate...take RT6 too Willimantic...don;t take the highway bypass and right past the big intersection on thel left is RT 66 Hamburgers......mediocre.

Harry's is my suggestion...take a good map and the backroads over to RI from Colchester are easy and very scenic...go through Lebenon...biggest town green in the US.

If you can shoot just a bit farther south on your route through Colchester, CT, I'd definitely stop at Harry's Drive-In...considered by many the best burger in CT. Here's a picture and roadfood review:

If you need to stay on Rt44, you'll drive right by shady Glen in Manchester, CT. Not a roadside type place, really a typical New England dairy/sandwich shop. However, their cheeseburgers are NOT to be missed (I grew up in Manchester, so I am a bit partial to them). They use 4 slices of cheese that lay on the grill and get really crispy...here is a roadfood pic for you:

      Enjoy!
