I would never have dreamed it (because on the whole the Chinese food there is well below Toronto standards) but I actually had a very authentic Sichuan food experience in London (UK) at a place called Bar Shu. Some of its dishes featured whole Sichuan peppercorns. Although I eat lots of Sichuan in Toronto, these peppercorns were a complete surprise to me. Does anywhere in Toronto use them?
For those who don't know, these little things are incredibly powerful. Just the teeniest nibble and your tongue and mouth are instantly going to tingle and water like crazy and the sensation takes several minutes to subside. Remarkable.
i've had real sichuan peppercorns at chinese traditional buns (on dundas just east of augusta in the basement). i've also had them at pals wt (on college at borden on north side). i don't remember if i've had them at sichuan garden (on east side of spadina just south of college) but that another place that might have them... hope this helps.
