Can I find Rotel in New York?

I've been away from Texas for six years and one of the few things I really miss is some damn good queso - takes me right back to Magnolia's in Austin. Back in Texas, I used to make queso at home with some velveeta, rotel, and spices. Now, I know this is Chowhound and velveeta might get some attitude, but if you're a Texan, you know what I mean.

The thing is, I've never found any Rotel (for those of you wondering what it is, it's just tomatoes and green chilis, canned, and it's a TX institution) at grocery stores. Any other Texan transplants around here know what I mean and where to find it?

And yes - I've made queso from scratch before, but there's something missing and I suspect it's Rotel.

  1. I have found rotel at dean and deluca on broadway before.

I used to make this queso all the time Id add ground beef with chili powder and cummin(taco seasoning) to it and have it as a meal with corn chips.

My favorite was Kirby Lane cafe with that huge scoops of avocado in the center.

When i miss Texas i order from here http://www.foodlocker.com/texas.html

    1. I haven't been able to find it. I've used the plain ol' chilies that come in a can and it was nowhere near as good.

mingt, I like your queso version! will def give that a try.

You can also order Ro-tel here - http://www.texmex.net/Order/Order.htm

      1. Ive purchased Rotel at Wal-Mart in the NYC area . . .

        1. You guys are awesome! I'll check D&D and Wal-Mart.

          1. aaaahhh...i know your rotel fix. :) you can find it at the food emporium. all of them may have it, but i bought it specifically at the one in union square.

            1. Hi there,
I'm a born and raised Austinite, been in NYC for nearly 4 years though now. I would argue that no one loves queso more than me, and I've got witnesses to back that statement up. That said, I've started putting together a "Rotel Map" of all the places I know you can purchase Rotel. In Manhattan you can get regular and chunky at Zabar's on 80th and Broadway and Westside Market on 76th and Broadway for $1.79 a can. In Booklyn, you can get it at the Key Foods on Lorimer and Grand St. in Williamsburg, and until recently they had Regular, Milder, and Festival Mexicano for 1.79 a can, though as of last week they only had Milder, and it was 1.89. Also in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, the Associated on McGuinness has Regular and Festival Mexicano for 1.79 a can. Steep prices, but I argue it's worth every penny. Not too long ago I was near the Prospect park 7th Ave. B/Q station, and there's a grocery across the street that had the Festival Mexicano and Italian also for 1.79.
So like I said, I'm a little obsessed. My dad sent me 31 lbs of Extra hot Rotel and HEB brand Easymelt cheese. Who's the biggest queso fan? This guy.

              1. I believe Target has it. (Jersey City and Brooklyn)

                I know Walmart has it.

And it is cheaper than the places mentioned above

                1. Lobo in Brooklyn is an outpost of an Austin restaurant and serves real "queso" (as us southerners call it!).

                  1. Stop and Shop carries it, at least at the ones I've been to.
