Illuna Basque or Alternatives?
Illuna Basque has a 1000 point opentable res, inexpensive dishes, and a lot to choose from... Im planning a meal for 6-8 people all foodies to varying degrees but some more strapped for cash than others.
Has anyone been to Illuna Basque lately? is Piperade far and away better?
Im also thinking of Chapeau or A16 as ive been to both and know they are great, but wanted to try something I havent been to before.
any other suggestions? food is most important, but the wine (by the glass particularly) is likewise important.
How is CAV? is the space just too austere for a fun group outing?
While I haven't been to Illuna Basque, I've been interested in trying the local Basque restaurants and reading up alot on them.
Based on what I've been reading, when I go to Illuna Basque I'm not expecting much from it. The chef is a twenty-something guy who was at Piperade for a few months and decided to open his own place. What I've been reading almost consistantly is that Illuna Basque is a great party place, so to speak, for that age group.
The owner seems to always be chatting it up with the customers and not keeping an eye on details. The impression I get is that the food is sloppy and inconsistant.
So I'm going, to check it out, but, as I said, I will go in with low expectations. Give Piperade a try, but do a search on the board for the good dishes. There are some clunkers and some great stuff. I don't eat it but the fois gras always gets a favorable mention.
Illuna Basque is "okay." I didn't think the food was interesting or particularly well executed.
Of course usually your experience is determined largely with the company, so with your large group you'll probably be okay anywhere you go. However, you might want to look into Fresca. I don't think they're on opentable, but they are popular with two locations.
I had a terribly mediocre experience at Illuna Basque in February. I would definitely do not think that CAV is too austere. The owner is usually at the bar offering wine suggestions, and people are generally there to have a good time. There is a great table in the back right corner as you walk in, right near the bar, that I am sure you would have a good time at.
