I'm looking for a good gourmet bakery in the DC/MD area a la the Cheeseboard in Berkeley, CA or Sullivan Street Cafe in Hells Kitchen, NYC...any suggestions?

Not sure what is deemed truly gourmet to you, but you could check out Bonaparte's in Savage Mill in Savage, MD. Great French pastries (not to mention the bread!).

I second this recommendation most vigorously. Don't forget the croissants. You can sometimes get the croissants and bread at the Takoma Park - Silver Spring food coops.
