Anyone in NY have any ideas where I can buy a bottle of Luxardo Maraschino liqueur in order to make a proper Aviation cocktail? Sherry-Lehman does not carry it, nor do other midtown liquor stores I have tried. I have a bottle of Stock, but I understand that Luxardo is the standard-bearer.

Thanks!

Not that this is any specific help, but I also strongly recommend the Maraska brand of Maraschino liqueuer. It tends to be more difficult to find even than Luxardo, but if you spot it, it's good stuff! I haven't compared the two directly to really be able to say if one's better than the other.

Park Ave. liquor (on Madison near 42nd St.) was able to get it from their distributor a couple of years ago. Other than that, I spent about a week once trying to find someone who had it on the shelves. Unless someone's sneaked a bottle or two into their store since then, forget it.

Thanks to all for you suggestions. I snagged a bottle today at Astor Wines & Spirits and just had the opportunity to try some straight. It tastes much more complex than the Stock maraschino with both a hint of sweetness and bitterness all at once. Tonight I will try the venerated Aviation Cocktail!

As someone who has only had the Maraska -- pretty much the only brand I've seen here in Los Angeles -- I'm curious to know how it compares to the Luxardo or Stock. Has anyone tried all three?

OK, what's in an Aviation cocktail and how did yours come out? I have a bottle of Stock maraschino liqueur and I'd love to try it. TIA

OK, there are variations but here is the one I made:

1 1/4 oz. of gin
1/4 oz. maraschino liqueur
1/4 oz. lemon juice (to taste)

Shake it with crushed ice and serve in a cocktail glass..delicious and oh-so classic!

hi Bobbyrab,
I'm glad that you found Luxardo at Astor Place.
I know that LeNell's in Red Hook also carries it, and other crazy hard to find liquors. It was the only place in town I was able to find Parfait Amour.
