I'm partial to Icarus, because my wedding reception was there, and my wife used to be one of the chefs. That said, I've never seen them fail, especially for a special occasion. Also, they've recently changed chef de cuisine, and Bill Flummerfelt (sp?) has been a great breath of fresh air.

      Just my 2 cents...

At that price point, for a celebratory meal, I might look at Rialto, Pigalle, Mamma Maria, No. 9 Park, Sage.

I like MC Slim JB's recs, but I also will add one that I know he does't agree with: I love Mistral, in the same neighborhood as Icarus. Ask to be seated in Tarso's section, ask for his recommendations, and he will treat you to a wonderful night.

I've been dining at Icarus periodically for many years (though probably not since last summer), and it remains a very consistent experience: very good New American that no longer represents the cutting edge of the local food scene as it once did, very solid and professional service, a pretty (though loud) Art Deco dining room, and the high prices typical of swanky South End restaurants. It has a nice little bar, and interesting wine list, and live jazz some nights. I think the prices -- many apps in the low teens, many entrees in the mid-thirties -- have gotten a little over-the-top for what it is.

Also consider Salts (Cambridge), Campania (Waltham), Clio (Boston).

Icarus gets consistently good to very good reviews on this board, which is consistent with my own experience. It rarely, if ever, nips at greatness, but is consistently good. And it is a lovely place.
