A friend of mine has just arrived home from India, and is anxious to show me what "Thali" food is...Has anyone heard of this type of food? And if you have, where is the best place in Toronto to get it?

    Thali is a mixed plate of Indian food, usually you choose between veg and non-veg. There is some dal, a curry of the day, usually some makhani, some raita, a nan, etc. It's really a nice luncheon thing.... most Indian restaurants serve it. You just order veg or non-veg thali, and they do the rest. Bombay Bhel at Hwy 7 and Leslie does it well.

      Yep, that's thali

      You can get a really nice South Indian vegetarian thali at Saravana Bhavan, which has a location in Mississauga and in Scarborough

        Thail = Saravana Bhavan.
        Keep in mind that it is all vegetarian but it's excellent Thali food.

        South Indian Dosa Mahal does a fantabulous veg thali for less than six dollars! Bloor just east of Lansdowne.

          Try Madras Palace:

            You might want to take her to little India. Madras Durbar (1435 Gerrard St.) is very good and very, very cheap. The mango lassies are mmmmm good and you might want to wear something with a loose waist because it is quite filling. The neighborhood is likely full of stuff to remind your friend of home. After you eat, hit Rang, west of the restaurant for some cool Indian decor items.

            Also, Biryani House (http://www.biryanihouse.com/home.html) at Yonge and Wellesley. They no longer do lunch, but they have a satellite restaurant in the alley just south of Bloor off Yonge that provides eat-in and take out lunches. At this time of year you might be able to score a table outside.

              Unfortunately, Madras Durbar closed last year.

                Thanks for the update jamie. That is definitely too bad. There were quite a few other places in the area, do you know any around there that are as good as Madras Durbar was (or better)?

                Try Rashnaaa on Wellesley just west of Parliament.

                  Moti Mahal on Gerrard St in Little India. They offer veg and non veg thalis.

                    Second this. My absolute favorite place for Indian food. Always get the veg thali, unless I'm taking out.

                    Try Narula's, 1438 Gerrard East. The decor is NOT much to look at, but the food (all vegetarian) is great! And they have thali on Tuesdays for $2...how can you beat that?
