Hollywood Farmers' Market recommendations?

We're finally going tomorrow! Anyone care to recommend current favorites, both food varieties and sellers?

We frequent the So. Pas. FM most often & usually seek out organic fruits & vegs, but are open to any of the best local flavors. Is there any grass fed beef available? (I see from the website that there is buffalo). What are good prepared foods? Is there any good whole wheat bread? Cheese?

I am excited to expand our FM food intake; I've been reading The Omnivore's Dilemma & would like to further minimize industrial frankenfoods in my family's diet.

Many thanks for any suggestions. I'll report back with any special finds.

  1. Have fun! I go nearly every week and do all my produce shopping there.

There is grass fed bison. There is also a beef purveyor, but it may be grain finished. The beef guy also has pork, which is great. There are several bakeries, my favorite is Los Feliz Bakery, but I've never tried their whole wheat. As for cheese, Winchester Cheese Co. has a stand with their fantastic Gouda, I like the super-aged. They also carry some goat cheeses. Petaluma Cheese Co. also has a stand, and while I'm not a fan of their cheeses, I do pick up the occasional container of cheese curds. There are many nut stands, I love the roasted peanuts at the one on the west side of Ivar, north of Selma. Also many raisin and date purveyors, a couple of honey stands, a raw milk stand and various other prepared foods.

As to produce, right now, there are glorious apricots, peaches and plums (I got sweet, green ones last week) all over. We are also seeing the first good corn and melons. Persian mulberries and heirloom tomatoes should be coming soon. The one thing that I thing has had a rotten season, though it is almost over now, is strawberries, which are usually my favorite, but this season's have been lackluster.

I don't know if you are interested in the prepared foods but the best stands, IMHO, are the Thai (some of the best pad thai I've had and great coconut balls), Korean BBQ and pupusa stands, all on Selma west of Ivar.

    Have fun!
