Midtown Toronto - nice but not over the top!

My brother the foodie is coming to town with his wife, new baby and inlaws from NYC in July. We are looking for a place for a nice dinner that wouldn't be destroyed by four young kids!

Something in the midtown, Yonge/Eg or Danforth areas...he thought of Susur because of the private room but figured the menu might be a bit adventuresome for his inlaws. So..any thoughts? Not worried about cost, but would love a private or semi-private room that would accommodate 15-ish people nicely and not frown on kids.

Think really good but straightforward (Italian would be terrific!) food!

Thinking of Grano if nothing better comes along...

Thanks in advance!! :)

  1. For great Italian food and warm, inviting service, try Zucca at Yonge, south of Eg. With 15 people, you definitely need reservations and I think you could easily fill most of the back half of the restaurant. There is a natural break in the room that would give you a sense of privacy. Call them and discuss and they should give you a good sense of whether it will work for you. If it does work, you'll get some of the best Italian in the city, and manage the kid-factor.

I've never been keen on Grano, but I love, love, love Zucca, and it is just up the street.

You could also look at 7 Numbers on the Danforth. They evolved from Gio's and 5 Doors North. If you are inside, it is really, really loud. The wait staff have a fun/caustic attitude that will not be lost on th NYC crowd. Dishes are small, multi-course, tapas style and priced accordingly. I don't know if they take reservations though.

    For Zucca got to:
