Not downtown, but *very* interesting: Winterland - Sutter @ Steiner.

Also (if you are prepared for very high end): Fifth Floor, Michael Mina, Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton, Masa's.

Downtown, interesting and not-so-high-end: Cortez, Myth.

All of these places are quiet enough for easy conversation.
