Southern Adirondack food
We're renting a cabin in the Southern Adirondack area (closest small town is Wells) for a week in July. Are there any good restaurants nearby? We'll probably cook many of our meals and will bring our own staple supplies, but I'm wondering if local Hounds can point us in the direction of good grocery sources -- particularly for produce. All recs appreciated!

I'm going to also recommend Friends Lake Inn - truly terrific every time we've been. Their breakfast is excellent also, and their wine shop very cute. Oscar's Smokehouse is also great (I believe Friends Lake still uses a lot of their meats). There are some large grocery stores in the Glens Falls/Queensbury area if you are heading through there - the selection is typically very good and the produce fresh.

I thought Saratoga and Lake George were the South Adirondacks? I am not sure where Wells is, but if you're anywhere near LG, there are plenty of good places to choose from. Oscars Smokehouse in Warren is the bomb! Stock up your cabin with all their goodies and you will be quite content.

The only place I know of is in Speculator, about 40 minutes away, Melody Lodge. Really GOOD, very authentic Adirondack lodge.

Two places also a bit of a haul:
Merrill Magee House http://www.merrillmageehouse.com/
Davidson Bros. http://www.davidsonbrothers.com/

I know Wells is further South but there is a great restaurant about an hour away at Friends Lake Inn (www.friendslake.com). My wife and I have been their several times but, unfortunately, not in the past couple of years.
Get there early enough to do some shopping in the wine shop downstairs for some good, and inexpensive, wine.

Produce is tough to find in the Adirondacks. Speculator has a half-way decent grocery store (Charlie John's). I do not know of any farm markets though.
Good restaurants in Speculator - Melody Lodge (Great! Has linen tablecloths etc but is casual in an Adirondack lodge kind of way. Make reservations on weekends for sure.) and Swifty's (Simple bar food - but good).

I am not aware of anything in Wells.
Have a great trip, but bring your own produce!›2 Replies-
