Tuned in to the show yesterday-no Rocco...Went on WOR's website and he's been excised...what's up w/that?
Although I never cared for him before, he was pretty good on that show...shared plenty of interesting food info every day.

Since I don't have a television, I asked a friend to tape The Restaurant so I could see what RS is all about. It didn't take me more than a single episode to tell that his schtick would wear thin fairly quickly.

He has had his 15 minutes of fame and will fade quickly as he seems to lack personal discipline to carry projects to completion.

I happened to be listening when Rocco made the anti-fur statements. It was actually funny in its own way. He had to give away fur scarves and hats to listeners and he was appalled at the idea. You could just tell he was disgusted with himself for shilling something he didn't believe in. Now the crappy cookware he hawks on QVC...that's another story altogether... he has no moral problem there.

Shortly after the fur stuff, Rocco claimed a $275 bottle of wine was stolen from his studio, along with his headphones. Guess someone was giving him a message...

Rocco...go back to the kitchen...tout de suite.

You mean to say that Rocco does have some principals? Wow! As another poster said, he has had his 15 minutes, time to go back in to the kitchen, do some honest work, and continue working on his principals, and hopefully learn to treat the kitchen staff better, and maybe grow up.

One of my food trade mags had an article saying he is now "positioning" himself as a lifestyles expert, and trying to move up to bigger things. I think he is nothing much myself. Several friends say they caught him in a few major errors, so he isn't that educated on food or lifestyles.

I ate in Union Pacific more times than I can remember. He is a chef of incredible flair and talent. He devised a unique way of blending 3 different types of flavors. If he'd spent his days working in the Union Pacific kitchen, the only question would be when the Times would award him that fourth star. (Below, scallops with uni and mustard oil)

Those days at UP seem so far away, face it, he is a talent as a Chef but he decided to give it up when he started that joke "the Restaurant". You would think he would have learned his lesson and gone back to what he is good at, but it seems like he has become a whore to money and fame to the point that it is very hard to respect him anymore. To me, the whole thing is very sad.

Like I said previously, I was never a fan of his...until he took over the show after the departure (under equally mysterious circumstances) of the dreadful Arthur Schwartz (boring, self proclaimed Italian...Jewess...who I constantly mistook for Joan Hamburger in drag).
Anyway, within the constraints of the format, I think Rocco did a pretty good job on WOR. He managed to convey a considerable amount of good info, despite innumerable commercials, his own endless shilling, and all the cringe-inducing phone-in questions for fettucine alfredo, "mamma's" meatballs and similar redundant drivel. (a lot of food-talks' audience has to be spillover from Hamburgrs super-annuated crowd)
So whatever the circumstances, I lament his departure.
Judging from the sorry roster of candidates pre and post Rocco, my hopes are not too high for Food Talk in '06.
Kind of a shame, since there really ain't much on broadcast radio, terrestrial or otherwise for this food obsessed radio-slave...looking into podcasts as we speak!
Ciao!

I'm glad he's no longer on the air. I tried listening to Rocco several times after Arthur Schwartz was gone but could never get to like him. I wish WOR or some other station would pay Arthur what he's worth so he could return to the radio, a medium that he really meshed with perfectly. Over the years, I gathered immeasurable advice from him. But most important, it was his warmth and sincerity that I miss.

I'm glad he's gone - I could not stand listening to him - I found it hard to pay attention. I also wish they would get Arthur Schwartz back - There was always something to learn from him.Rocco was just full of himself and not very informative. I was apalled at the way Rocco treated Flemington furs who have supported the station for so many years - where does he think his salary comes from. He should have declined to do the ads. but not disparaged the company.

According to a recent Times article, the GM of the radio manager said, "There were some issues, and we couldn't come to an agreement." It seemed to have been a mutual decision to part ways. He wanted to go a different direction that the radio station didn't.

The show was fairly good at the start. The last several months it was annoying. I felt he was extremely arrogant to many of his guests and those that did not interview well he "trashed" on the next days show.
And those annoying annimated sound files they would insert during the calls was very juvenile and a turn-off.
