Those of you Chowhounds that never made it the big leagues--in sports or as celebrity chefs--now have a second chance. Burger King in New Orleans is offering a $5,000 "signing bonus" in a vain attempt to staff their restaurants after Hurricane Katrina. Wages are up too. ($15.00 per hour minimum.) Naturally this will be a personal lifestyle decision on your part. But remember Chowhounds, the holidays are coming...

That just goes to show that these corporation can actually afford and justify paying far above the minimum wage. Their political action committees usually say the opposite when fighting min wage laws. A local fast food joint here in Austin (Short Stop) was paying 9 bucks an hour with full medical and dental insurance during the tech boom.

Not sure I get your point, or that I agree with what I think you are saying. Why should ANY employer pay more than what the local economy is willing to support? WHy should we have minimum wages? If they offer too little, then people won't work for them, so they wil offer more until they can compete for workers. Seems pretty simple to me.

The other thing I noted is you are assumng these people work for the "Burger King Corporation", when in fact it is probably a local franchise, not a company store.

Well, our politics probably differ, and this will get off-topic anyhow, so there's no need to continue this.

I was just pointing out that the general impression is that these places are high volume, low margin. But then they can afford to pay much more when needed.
