Seth Robert's Shangri-La Diet
In an article in the September 11th New York Times, there's an article "Does the Truth Lie Within?: One professor's lifetime of self-experimentation," which descries the diet experiment of Professor Seth Roberts. Since people post questions here about diets, I thought this might be of interest.
Thinking that the body has the equivalent of an internal balance, he tricks the balance with a few spoonfuls of oil. It sounds unlikely, but apparently works. Has anyone here tried it?
I was too slow with this to post within the week that the NYT is online for free, but besides going to the library to read it, you can find it on other internet sites as well:

Thanks for posting this intriguing article. After reading it, I googled the diet and found a number of other, interesting articles.
What's most bothersome about this diet is that Robert maintains his weight loss by consuming only 1,200 calories per day.
Okay, so he's maybe not that hungry now, but that could be from any number of causes. But it also says that his lack of interest in eating lots of calories (whenever that actually occured) probably had much more to do with his weight loss than the Shangri-La Diet theory.

I'm trying it, it seems to work. Strange. It makes you feel so stuffed. Unbelievable.

How are you doing it? how long have you been trying this? Quantities and when?
Thanks!

If anyone's still interested in this diet, I thought I'd mention that the book is now available. (Full disclosure: I'm the book's editor - and a successful Shangri-La dieter myself.)

To Bob Brooks and/or anyone who has tried the plan successfully: could you please tell us how often you use the sugar/oil, and in what amounts? Thanks!!!

I saw the segment on GMA this morning. I ran out to the grocery store this evening after work and bought an enormous bottle of Canola oil (Thank goodness it wasn't hard to find - I had never heard of it). I had gone to the gym at around six and had dinner around 7:30. I usually eat something else before I go to bed (popcorn, cheese) and I could feel the post dinner evening cravings setting in. I bit the bullet and swallowed a tablespoon of the oil. Greasy but tasteless. Quite honestly, my cravings and desire to eat completely evaporated. 100%! And people, this never, ever happens to me. I always want to eat and after an hour at the gym, I feel enititled to eat all night long. I will be trying the sugar water tomorrow so I can let you know.

I saw the story on GMA too. I'm getting my canola tonight. :o) I've lost weight just cutting back on snacks and sugary drinks but am at a plateau. This sounds promising.

I saw the GMA program, but didn't catch how much or how often. Do you take a tablespoon before each meal and drink water and sugar in between? Wouldn't coffee with sugar do? Thanks

How often do we take the virgin Olive oil?
What amounts of sugar + water do we drink?

From the article that I read on abcnews.com, Seth was taking 1 tablespoon of oil EACH DAY. Also, he said he drank water with sugar (hot, I believe) between meals if he felt hungry.
As far as coffee goes, coffee with sugar would not work because coffee is an appetite stimulant. Drinking coffee makes you go to the bathroom and makes you hungry. Not a good diet plan...

i read an article on one website and it said to take one tablespoon of canola oil and 3 tablespoons of sugar to one pint of water twice a day between meals. it said mid morning and mid afternoon. so 10:00 and around 3 or 4. but with my job that doesnt work so i do it at 9 and at 3. i havent checked my weight but as far as it making me not want to eat, it works. so we will see.

Actually I think that caffeine is an appetite supressant.

It's about one month since GMA aired, has any tried, stuck with the Shanri La Diet?? Was thinking of trying it.

Coffee with sugar doesn't work because it has flavor which kicks in the desire to eat more. The point of Extra Light olive oil or sugar water is that they are flavorless, yet give calories.
