As go the Chinese restaurants so go the neighborhood? Interesting article about a Chinese gentleman and his Chinese restaurant in Bagdad.

  1. In the wake of the new wave of Chinese arrivals in the late 80s-early 90s, Oakland CA's sleepy Chinatown was revitalized, and expanded enormously both in territory and volume of business. The fact that downtown Oakland in general has experienced a notable renaissance, in the wake of Chinatown's rebirth, draws a clear connection to most observers. (The comparison to Baghdad is inadvertent, although SF long considered itself "Baghdad By The Bay".)

I said Chinatown, but in fact our boom has been fueled by a host of immigrant entrepreneurs, of all varieties, both Asian and non-Asian.
