    King of Northern Blvd.

I did during one of their fundraisers? for something or other....I wasn't that impressed...Maybe they do a better job when it's not a "special"....They didn't ruin my knives or anything..I just thought there could be a better edge...

I agree. I took my knives there during the city harvest benefit & felt like there was no difference between the knives before and after. It was a waste of time...

    2. I've never gone to Broadway Panhandler, but I recently had some Wusthof knives sharpened at Henry Westpfal on West 30th Street. They did a great job.

I too just took some knives to Westpfal and was very happy with the results. The store is on W 30th, between 6th and 7th, on the north side of the street, close to 6th Ave. The only catch is that they're not open on the weekends. I believe their hours are 9:30-6 M-F, and you might have to wait a few days to get your knives back.

"Samurai Sharpening Service" is a one-woman operation. Margery sets up shop at the Chelsea Market, in front of Bowery Kitchen Supply, Wed. & Sat., from noon to 6 p.m. She had my knives ready in about 45 minutes and did a great job. Plus, her prices are, I think, quite reasonable. Tel: 212-942-5228. E-mail:

P.S. While you wait, treat yourself to some homemade gelato at Johnny's, right behind Margery, in a front corner of the kitchenware store. This family-operated stand has been open only a few weeks. Very friendly people. Lots of great flavors to choose from. You can taste before you buy. Seriously delicious!!

        2. i own the eyeglass store next to Westphal on west 30th street near 6th avenue. they do a great job sharpening anything. theyve been around for over 50 years and they do the knives for many top chefs in nyc. if you go, stop in here to say hi. interesting to see if anyone actually reads these things.

          1. I haven't done it yet, but I took a knife skills class at the International Culinary Institute in NYC, and the instructor recommended BP as one of the best/most reliable places to get knives sharpened. (In fact, only found my way to this posting via googling it to get the address.) He also recommended taking a picture of your blade in advance if you have concerns about the place you're bringing it.

Now I've used them and can say they did a great job! Maybe kitnimbus was better at keeping their knives sharpened generally. Unfortunately, they couldn't do my poultry shears, which my honey always uses for flowers...
