I'm being offered $500 gift certificates to either Subway or Quizno's.

I've been to Subway a few times many moons ago, but have not really tried Quizno's.

Which is better?

Thanks.

I find that Quiznos subs are overkill - too much stuff, you lose the flavor.

That said, the "fresh" bread at Subway sucks. But the cookies make up for it, so I vote Subway.

I don't think either are "awful". they fit their market. But at 4 to 7 bucks per sub, you'd be eating a lot of subs at $500! I like the charity suggestions, $500 can go a long way to feed a charitable group.

I don't know about Quizno's, but Subway is indeed awful. Being succesful in their niche means nothing - most people have little ability to taste anything (judging by what sells in huge numbers) and less inclination to exercise what discriminatory powers they may possess.

A sandwich from any corner bodega in the city is better. Usually a lot better. The bread, while maybe fresh baked, tastes like crusty Wonder bread with some kind of cheap "spice rub" sprinkled on it and the cold cuts are third, not even second, rate. Seriously - I'd pass up lunch if that were my only option and I'd eaten within the last 12 hours, and I'm not proud. In a pinch I'll usually eat all manner of fast food without complaint.

Subway is indeed awful. Their bread is terrible, the meats are terrible, the vegetables are terrible every thing is terrible. Uhg vile. I never can understand how subway outposts can exist in NYC when there are so many great delis.

I have never had Quizno's so i cannot attest to its quality.

Quizno's in a heartbeat. Something that would be a worthwhile idea in addition to donating... if there's a picnic coming up at your workplace, be the office hero and get subs for everyone.

The bread is much better at Quiznos but I don't like toasted subs so I always aske for mine to be served "cold". Subway's bread is soft and doughy.

The charity or company picnic is definitely the best idea.

That said, even though technically you're getting more for your money at Subway, as has been pointed out on other posts, the ingredients are truly abysmal. I think even third rate is being generous. I don't know how anyone can consider that horrid gelatinous rubbery orange sheet that they are trying to pass off as cheese to be "healthy". Their "vegetarian" option is pretty desolate (I don't eat red meat, so that limits my options). Also, they are notoriously stingy with the ingredients.

(I know, I know... One little old lady: "the food here is awful" second little old lady: "and the portions are so small")

I was stuck in the Detroit airport for three months last year (long story) and found I could survive quite well on Quiznos. They had more choices, better ingredients, better flavor, and I think the overall better quality made it a "healthier" choice.

So.. whoever ultimately receives the $500 gift certificate will eat much better and healthier if it's from Quiznos.

Good luck.

I agree with other posters that Subway's ingredients are marginal at best, but sometimes it satisfies me. Very rarely, but sometimes.

In my area a given Subway will have a dozen customers waiting in line while the Quizno's across the street will have none. It's all about marketing. Same thing with McDonald's - there's a street near me with just about every fast food joint known to man within blocks of each other. The drive-thrus at most of them will have 1-2 cars, maybe, while the one at Mickey D's is 20-deep.

Anyway, and sorry for getting off-topic, but I'd choose Schlotsky's over Quizno's OR Subway. But none of them have ANY shame when it comes to sodium, remember that.

Re marketing. The most hilarious aspect is the constant harping on the "healthiness". When my nephew finally managed to drag me into a Subway and I saw how little filling they put on the sandwiches, I found myself wondering how on earth they managed to get even 5g of fat into a turkey sandwich. The mayo, maybe?
