Folks, it's that time of the year again.

This year, I am planning to get Mrs. Buffet a new ironing board cover and a case of spray starch for a Valentine's Day present IF - and I should mention that while I am benevolent with gift giving, I DO like to tie them to some aspect of self improvement on her part - she can successfully name all the lunchmeats.

Last year, she left out "Thuringer" and did not get the mop she had her heart set on.

Since then, she has been practicing diligently and making field trips to grocery stores. I have not wanted to be unreasonable by asking her to list anything in paste or semisolid form, such as potted meat, but rather, I am keeping this restricted to loaf style meats or link style greater than 2" in diameter, and she has no restrictions on natural vs. artificial casings.

Tell me, have I left anything off of this years' list?

As far as I can tell, the list looks pretty good-

I would add 1 sausage: the German Lantjaegger
In most regions they're very small in diameter (1/2") but in my neighborhood, I am fortunate enough to have 2 different grinders who make them larger (at about the 2" minimum you suggested).

YOU seem to know your sausages, but to those playing at home, Lantjaeggers are a coarse smoked garlic sausage which is then air dried. They are most often found in linked pairs. Really, they're more of a snacking sausage than a deli style, but heavens they're tasty and expeditious!

Why no Italian salumeti? Genoa? Sopresetta? Pepperoni? Hungarian Garlic sausage? These are a few (more) of my favorite things!

uummm. I don't much like sausage in general, but I LOVE those chewy little lanjaeggers. My Wisconsin born husband introduced me to them. Not sure where he was getting them sent from WIS, but I have discovered that Dean and Deluca in both NY and Charlotte have some that are delish.

OK, we have been to Charlotte but NOT to D&D, as I don't want her to get too many high minded ideas, but if the Lanjaegers fall below the diameter requirement, it probably wouldn't be fair to add them.

However, our anniversary and her birthday are coming up. She has appropriate memory competencies for those dates as well.

We live in South Carolina. If I mentioned German Lantjaeger to folks around here, they'd think it was some kind of a prissy dog. I mean, I want to be FAIR to my wife... .. no...wait a minute, she was raised in Pennsylvania. She MIGHT be expected to know this. OK, I'll add it to the list and give her a silicone ironing board pad if she guesses it.

But as for Italian salumeti, genoa, sopresetta, pepperoni, hungarian garlic sausage... OK, I'm adding those....

Actually, it's sometimes listed as "kabanosi" in Polish meat markets and sometimes as "kabanos." Google lists only 3 hits for "kabanoski sausage" and prompts for "kabanos" instead.

You're right about there being a fresh and a dried version. Both are worth trying but I like the dried version a bit better.

You make your wife rattle off a list of various lunchmeats otherwise you won't get her a present of an ironing board and spray starch!?! What if she made you rattle off a list of every type of high heel available before she got into bed with you? Presents are presents not something to hold hostage for self-improvement. (Perhaps things are different in the red states?)

If I misread this and you've asked your wife for a basket of lunchmeat, that is a brilliant idea.

Someone suggested that I subdivide SPAM into Lo-Sodium SPAM, Bar-B-Q Spam, SPAM with Hot Sauce but I think I'll just let "SPAM" suffice. I mean, I want to be fair.

Another emailer suggested adding "Bully Beef" but I think the last time it was made was around the time of the Scott expedition to the South Pole...

I was awefully thankful when Suzy in Chains finally mentioned Lebanon Bologna which is one of my favs.It is 100% smoked beef with a vinegar and spice flavor the bubbas should like it. There is also sweet Lebanon Bologna which is not a favorite. It has only been recently that you could get LB in deli cases here in SC. We would have to wait until some one was heading north to get our LB and Scrapple. One of the best breakfasts is eggs, grits and scrapple. I call the old Blue and Gray. Had a friend who use to get all beef hot dogs from Sam's Club don't remember the brand name but they were larger than the 1/4 lb. hotdogs you get at the Hess gas stations and he would call them training aids. Can't image for what? Well maybe I do. When I was getting my Commerical Drivers License the instructor suggested I sit on a John with a broom stick and learn the shift pattern for the tractor trailer. The broomstick was entirely to long so I bet one of those training aids would have been perfect.
