Southern Foods

While doing some research on the New Orleans board, have come across some extremely interesting past topics (including many previous LA posters -wonder where they are now), and was thinking of identifying some typical creole / cajun items from that area.

Examples:
Acme's oysters
Po-boys
Mufalletta
Creole mustard
Coconut cake
Ferdi (?) sandwich
Crawfish etoufee (sp)
Gumbo
Green tomatoes
Beignets
Hansens snow-bliz (nectar & peach creme)
Hibigs new orleans style pies
Zapps potato chips

Am also particularly interested in hearing of some special spices, pickles, condiments, ingredients and such like (eg Creole mustard) which are renowned from that region

ps: hopefully this is the right board to post this on, however incase the CHT wishes it moved to another board, please bear in mind that its now 1am here and am now asleep and having a nice dream so will check tomorrow.

Thanks/Amin

It's a refreshing herbal concoction, not unlike Campari. Very cooling when it's wringing-wet sweaty and you're stuck there in your seersucker suit and bow tie - a situation not unknown amongst the gentry of NAwlins... nor of Nashville, as I recall, another place where they sell lots of Pimm's.

The Pimm's is the same thing. The Napoleon House in the Quarter uses it for its signature cocktail, the Pimm's Cup. Don't know if the cocktail is English or not; I'm not sure of the mixer they use, but it's garnished with a slice of cucumber.

Athena, the website was very interesting.
Candy, you have already introduced me to some
extremely interesting stuff such as the grits
and BBQ sauce, but have started preparing a
loooong list so pack less clothes please when
you get here. Its a win/win situation as Doug
will then have to willingly allow you to spend
more here (yes we all know the $ is weak but we
dont care do we ?) :-)

good to hear from you Abdul. Southern food seems to be very interesting and am sure there's a lot of good stuff to be experienced out there again once the situation returns to normal and the hounds go back.

Regarding posting whilst asleep, this is something have learned to do since I found CH. Its addictive.

Abdul, your flowery language scares me which is the reason I did not respond to your last email which came in shades of pinks and electric blues. I am a simple straight guy and my interests lie in food. Soul food I intend to experience in NOLA when things return to normality, and while I do intend to visit NY in the near future, it will be to experience foodie heaven NY style such as bagels, pies, B&W cookies, pizzas, and perhaps visit places such as DiFara's, Kalustyans, and many others on my long to-do list.

So let's get back to discussions of sweetness insofar as it is chow related. Hope you capiche my drift and look forward to contuing foodie discussions and maybe get some more brilliant ideas with regard to Southern Foods on this thread
