In honor of the season, we are of course eating lots of peaches. Short of making one myself (which I might), where is the best peach pie (or galette, cobbler, etc.) to be bought? We'd prefer take-away. Thanks!

Frog Hollow Farm's very good. They've got a store at the SF Ferry Building and stands at various farmers markets.

You know, I was going to say in my original post that I tried one of their peach mini-tarts last year around this time and wasn't that impressed. (Bought it from what was then just a farmer's market stand at the Ferry Building.) But maybe I should give it another go.

I love their peaches but the mini tarts need a bit more sweetness for my taste - tasted a bit flat? I thought the pastry was fine - it just needed a bit more of something else .... a schmear of almond paste? oh, well - they don't seem to have a problem selling them as they are....

Wish I had one to recommend to you, but at least I can tell you one to cross off your list. Thursday afternoon on my way down to Salinas, I took the coast route and stopped in Pescadero at Duarte's to pick up some pie. I bought a slice each of pecan, ollalieberry, and peach to take home. The lady at the counter told me that all the fruit pies are made with fresh fruit right now.

The pecan was its usual splendid self, the best one I've had in these parts. We also loved the ollalieberry. But the peach was disappointing. The fruit was meager and too soft, and also could have used a little more sugar.

I mention it because until now, I'd not had any pie from Duarte's that I didn't enjoy immensely. Maybe peach isn't their thing.

It's funny, it's about midnight and I've come back from a day trip down the coast and back by Alpine Road...We stopped at Duarte's and I had the Peach Pie, and my friend had strawberry rhubarb...both of which were excellent with a wonderful short crust.. My peach was one of the best I have had, with intense peach flavor (often this is just too mild) and was more than sweet enough and hot out of the oven... melting its' vanilla ice cream accompanyment...both pies were far and away the best things about our meal. (The hot sourdough bread was also very crusty and tasty!)
We then saw 2 Ronald Reagan films at the Stanford (my friend didn't tell me which films we were to see!) because of that I made him go to the new Chicago pizza place just opened on Emerson around the street from the theater. Zachary's has nothing to worry about...nice place though with great servers, but the sauce had the raw uncooked taste of oregano, there was not nearly enough cheese, and the crust should have been cooked longer (it was too bready)...
So, Foodwise today, our pies were the best thing!
I also like the uncooked peach pies at Marie Callenders when in season...they are in a crisp crust with an apricot glaze and topped with handmade whipped cream.. They also do a similar unbaked strawberry pie.

Thanks for the peach pie counterpoint. I would love to believe that Duarte's record with pies is unsullied and that this disappointment was a once in a century fluke. (g)
