Hi,

The link you posted is for Galco's and I recommend going there for a visit if you're interested in unusual sodas. The folks there are really nice too. We really like the mint julep and blueberry sodas, and I like the Diet Kane Cola. Still lamenting the death of RC Draft, though!

I have come close to ordering soda from their website a few times, but the shipping cost keeps putting me off (I also don't eat $650 lunchs at the French Laundry, but show me a good pastrami sandwich and I would gladly give up my kingdom for it). Galco's is only about 35 miles from me, so one of these days I will cruise over there, and then I'll probably go crazy and try and cart out the whole store.

Go with a friend if possible and get the case club card. $25 for the card. $5 off a case up to 10 cases. Cases can be mix or match. You can get 24 different flavors if you want. No expire on the card. We live in OC and make the trek up infrequently and stock up then.

Even with the price of gas, the trek up still beats shipping. The owner says shipping glass and the packaging to protect it makes for a heavy package.

"Real" Coke with sugar instead of HFCS is available year round in Canada, or at least the parts I have been to (Ontario and Quebec).

Also I find it interesting that there is no caffeine in Canadian Mountain Dew.

If you are ever in Atlanta with time to kill, visit the World of Coca-Cola, just to go to the room where they have dispensers pouring Coca-Cola products from all over the world. Quite interesting!

Beats me.

To be kosher for Passover, the caramel coloring can't be made from corn. Coke doesn't change the ingredient labels for its Kosher for Passover version (but that's why it always refers to corn syrup or sugar, to cover both the regular and special versions).

Caramel coloring is made from corn syrup - that means it's made from HFCS (the #1 ingredient in corn syrup).

There are four levels of caramel coloring - the one used in sodas is made by adding ammonia and sulfites. (The other three levels use one or the other in lesser amounts). Just more chemical load, in my opinion.

What's the story with the different carbonation?

The coke here in Spain is made with real sugar and also has less carbonation. Or, at least the carbonation is different. There's a lot of bubbling when you pour it out of the bottle and then it gets still quickly. If you shake the glass a little, the bubbles reappear.

I can't say for sure, but I also think that the coke here is not as sweet.

If I recall correctly, KfP Coca-Cola has a different color cap than the normal ones, which makes it easy to spot... I'm pretty sure it's a yellow cap. At any rate, the cap is marked OUP so you know it's the right stuff. I remember learning about this a few years ago and trying the KfP Coke- it was a taste memory that I hadn't realized I'd lost.

Here's an interesting take on the issue... maybe it's not the sugar after all...?

"During Passover, the Coca Cola bottling company of New York makes kosher for Passover Coke. Sugar is used instead of corn syrup...in point of fact, the difference between Coke containing corn syrup and Coke with sugar is pretty minimal. The water quality of the area where the Coke is bottled has more to do with the variations in taste than anything else.

New York City is justly famous for having a great source of good tasting water. Therefore, the "kosher" great taste that many out-of-New York Coke drinkers attribute to the sugar in kosher for Passover Coke may be due to the water."

Yeah - sorry, I always thought the 'water is better in NYC' thing was a bunch of hooey - and i live here! I read something not long ago that said the 'pureness' of the water here has little effect in most places because the pipes in the city are so old and nasty. Organic Style recently did a test of water and the stuff in NYC had as much crap (I remember arsenic!) as anywhere else.

I dunno about other people but I can taste the chemicals in stuff (like corn syrup) when I've been living a fairly chemical free life.

Who knows!! I'm curious how they handle the the caramel coloring thing for the Kosher Coke.

For an alternative to Galco's for hard to find soda pop, try this link to a place in Phoenix, Arizona. They have many of the same selections for much lower prices and ship for less, too. They are actually so much cheaper that it's usually cheaper to buy from them and have the soda shipped to me from Arizona, than it would be to drive down the street and buy from Galco's (I live in Los Angeles), though I still use Galco's occasionally for an immediate one bottle fix.
