Hi,

I won some darjeeling tea about two years ago, and still have a lot left. Does anyone when this type of tea expires, and along with some recipes using it? Thanks!

Most teas degenerate with time, but if you kept it in an airtight container it should still be drinkable.

Like herbs and spices, old teas never expire, they just fade away. Unless you have optimal storage conditions (airtight containers kept in a cool place away from direct sunlight) the flavor will have faded some by now, but should still be drinkable. You can check for yourself by giving the tea a sniff- if it smells like old hay, go get some new tea.

I am a tea merchant from Darjeeling and the longest duration we keep is for one year. If some teas are left with us we tend to sell it giving special discounts or offers to our existing clients. Well, if you have contained the tea well, then the tea may be drinkable but I guess by now most of its essence might have gone, giving you a plain drink. Darjeeling Teas are meant to be consumed within one year.

Now you can add some extra spirit to your tea by adding some extra things - you can make use of this by making ice tea in a tall glass which is quite refreshing. And if you have Autumn tea with you then you can add milk and some ginger to have it as ginger tea which is supposed to be good if you have cough and cold. There are so many ways to utilise your tea.

The subject is vast and complicated and I just can't tell you everything on this small post of mine.

Regards,
Bandhana
