I always reuse the cloudy kind of plastic containers find in delis or wherever there is take out. Now I see a lot of clear plastic containers being used. Are they freezer safe? microwave safe? Just as good? They seem thinner with a cover that fits less tightly.
Thanks.

Some plastic containers are designed for microwave use, some are not. The ones that are not, will/may leach plasticizers into the food. Unfortunately, just because they don't melt in the microwave does not mean they are safe. Conversely, just because the plasticizers leach into your food, does not make it unsafe. But, I don't want to consume plasticizers. The FDA considers some plasticizers to be safe, some not.

You should ask the deli if the containers are safe for microwave use, ask the deli to show you the packaging the containers come in, the packaging may have text indicating if they are safe or not. You can determine for yourself if they are freezer safe.

I'm with you. After some health issues I needed to rid my life of phyto-estrogens (sp?). We threw out all plastic and now I have a kitchen filled only with glass containers - I actually love it. I enjoy not having plastics around...feels very 'old school'.

Know how you drink an old bottle of water and it tastes like plastic? That's because chemicals from the plastic have leached into the water. Doesn't have to be microwaved for that to happen. I won't even buy my milk in plastic.

I have heard that freezing in plastic is OK as long as you take it out of the plastic when thawing.
