Aqua is maybe a bit heavier on the expense account, especially if you like foie gras with your fish.

Farallon probably has better desserts.

town hall would be my rec- definately new american with some seafood- it's a newish restaurant- with good food and an sf sort of scene

farallon I would not call hip (sorry more touristy in my estimation)- maybe when it opened *many* years ago unless they've redecorated since then- though you could have some very good seafood there

I agree with you -- you won't find the hip crowd hanging out at Farallon these days.

The food there is good, though I prefer Aqua's a little more. But Farallon's decor is more fun, as has been indicated by other postings.

I've never been to aqua but have seen the dining room and much prefer it to farallon

aqua would seem to fit the request more specifically and unfortunately we don't have anywhere near the selection of finer/hip/seafood restaurants that nyc has (in fact- aqua and farallon may be the only two unless you consider fifth floor when the chef is doing the "sashimi tasting menu" on occasion)

wish we did

Farallon. Mark Franz's cooking is still as inovative and scrumptous as it was the day it opened or when he was doing his magic at Stars. Great wine list and the deserts are stunning by Emily Luchetti who just won the James Beard award for best pastry chef. You WILL need your expense account.

As a recent NYC transplant, I think you'd be better off going to Slanted Door. Although it's not solely seafood (terrible pun), they serve some of the finest in the city. And you get a wonderful room, an excellent wine list, and a great view.

The new Slanted Door has a wonderful view, and (when the kitchen has it together) great food, but the room is sterile and unpleasant, like a late-60s airport terminal. It's really a huge step down from even the previous location.

Plus you don't really need an expense-account budget to eat there.
