I'd like to send a friend a food basket (or box)--is there an equivalent to Harry & David in England? Fortnum & Mason is too pricey. I'm looking to send some good quality fruit or jam or cheese/biscuits combo. My friend works in an industrial park an hour from London, so the package needs to be sent by post, not delivery.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I know you weren't looking for chocolate, but these guys dish up some seriously good chocolate. They're based in brighton, and do some outrageously good dried fruit and chocolate. (dried mango with chili dark choc...mmmm...)

Also, here's the contact info for my local cheese shop that sells lots of jams/chutneys/crackers, etc.. I believe they do gift baskets and may be able to post. THeir cheese is top-notch and the jams and such are usually from smaller high end producers. They have fair prices, I think, although obviously they're not cheap, either.

Finally, this might take a little leg work but could be worth it. Here's a consortium of small scale producers (lots of jams, etc.) just outside London. Most of them don't sell direct to the public but they all have emails so if you contact them I'm sure they would be able to help you out.

Good luck!
