Iodine is a chemical necessary for proper thyroid function. It is added to salt to prevent goiters in people who lack iodine in their diet. This used to be a problem for people in inland areas, since iodine most commonly found in foods produced from the ocean. These days it's much less of a problem.

Some people say iodized salt has a chemical taste. Most people can't tell the difference.

I seem to have a heightened sensitivity to the metallic taste. I've started carrying a small salt and pepper mill (in a glasses case, discretely) to avoid the problem. I can't believe I didn't think of it for so many years but it's really enhanced dining out.
