I really want to make candy for the holidays, to give as gifts and stuff. Last year, I made some peppermint bark that went over really well. My great aunt used to make divinity every Christmas, and now that she's gone, I really miss it. I'm sure I can find a ton of recipes online, but I'd much rather get a good cookbook that will tell me a lot about candymaking in general, tips and techniques, as well as give recipes.

Any suggestions?

Check out Carole Bloom's book on candy as well as Bruce Weinstein's "Ultimate Candy Book". Both of these books are incredible resources.

And, to save some dough, use Epicurious (it's free). They have very good selection of candy recipes, mostly from Bon Apetit or Gourmet back issues. I've made many of their candy recipes for gifts for Christmas, and have had good-to-great success with all of them. These are the ones I've used:

Dutch Chocolate Mint Truffles
Hard Maple Taffy
Chocolate Candy Cane Rings

Enjoy!
