Alternatives to lava rocks for imu??

We're planning to roast a pig for a backyard luau in couple of weeks. The problem? Can't find suitable stones to line the imu and fill the pig. Any suggestions? Can bricks be used? Or will I poison everyone? Have done all kinds of weird outdoor cooking before, but never in a hole in the ground. Please advise.

I certainly don't claim to be an expert, but I went to a pig roast once (long ago and far away, but the taste of it is still a fond memory!!) and instead of lava rocks the esteemed roaster (a Peruvian man, for what it's worth) used stones. Biggish ones. Maybe 6" across and up. No toxicity, just yummy roasted piggy. Gawd, I'm glad I'm a carnivore!
