Hi. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, discerning online wine merchant in the USA. Somewhere with a wide range of wines, domestic and imported, who can make reliable recommendations and deliver. I'd like to send a cousin a couple of cases as a wedding gift...
Any ideas, good experiences with particular merchants, etc?

Many thanks.

I recently purchase two cases of wine from Sam's at an excellent price. If you order a catalog you get special discounts. Excellent customer service and all bottles arrived intact.

You should be aware that the purchase and shipment of wine by and to "ordinary" consumers in the USA is (at present at least) covered by a patchwork of individual State laws. While a shipment from a winery in, say, California to a consumer in Oregon might be permissible, a shipment to a consumer in another State might be prohibited (and could be deemed a criminal act in some situations). In any event, whoever you choose to attempt to do business with will presumably know the rules that apply. (The regulatory scheme under which the U.S. wine industry operates is currently under attack in the U.S. Supreme Court as an impermissible burden on interstate commerce under the U.S. Constitution.)

Yes, it seems like the relevant laws are those of the recipient state, as far as I can tell. Online wine merchants' web sites often have a list of which states they will and will not ship to. Their policies don't always correspond to the actual laws of the state in question, and you may find variations among different shops. For example, if your state prohibits shipment of wine to you, it may be that this law is rarely or never enforced, so that some or most wine shops will be willing to ship to you even though it's technically illegal.

K&L, has some nice selections!
WineClub, WineExchange, LAWineCo, and WoodlandHillsWine are all other good shippers here in L.A.
Sam's also has good inventory and is very reputable in areas East.
PremierCru has occasional inventory problems, but have some great stuff at fine prices.

Through Wineaccess.com I was directed to Chelsea Wine Vaults of NYC. I ordered numerous wines for Christmas/New Year's, many hard to find in my local wine stores. Everything arrived intact and was of excellent quality.
