OK, I'm sold. They sound incredibly useful but are they all alike? I'd like some recommendations for a good but inexpensive one. Thanks all.

After recommondations by chowhounds and an article about them in the cooking section of local Sunday paper, I bought a Braun 200 which also came with a little chopper and whisk...bought it with a discount coupon at Linen and Things..price ended up much less than $30.00.. also just saw that Consumers Report just highly recommended this brand and the 200. Found the little chopper great for nuts, onions, garlic, but haven't used the whisk yet... and the immersion part does a great job on my soups. Had compared models, brands and prices over the internet and was more confused...but am very pleased. Best of all except for the main immersion part...it's all dishwasher safe...

I used a Braun for years, but became frustrated when I wanted a very smooth soup. I blended forever and it was still choppy-looking. My husband got me the $90 (I think) one from William's Sonoma--I couldn't be happier with it! Because I make soup in HUGE quantities, this has been a real timesaver for me.
