After reading John Thorne's article about this soup we searched around at a few grocery stores to find it and had it for dinner last night. Delicious, if a bit salty. Due to the tripe, it has that very distinctive flavor, though, not overwhelming. I enjoyed it, and will definately buy it again. I just wish it didn't cost $2.49 a can. But I guess that's a small price to pay to not have to cook tripe from scratch.

John Thorne's website is outlawcook.com, but I actually read the article in the "Best Food Writing 2003" available at your local bookseller. They have put out an edition for the last 4 years or so. They're great reads.

If you're willing to order some over the internet, netgrocer.com carries it.

Personally, I'd love to know who carries it in the Boston area. Two years ago, I searched all over northwest suburban Boston for Pepper Pot soup. (My mother had requested some for a Christmas gift!) After a long, fruitless search, I eventually ordered 12 cans from netgrocer.com. It seemed like a lot of trouble for soup but my mother sure appreciated it!

The three "import" flavors I recall from upper Vermont are Pepper Pot, Scotch Broth and French Canadian Pea Soup (regular one in US is just "Pea Soup"). Are there others? And where are people finding these in the US - some sort of Canadian shop?

Is there a comprehensive list of Campbell's national variants somewhere?

As I said I buy mine at Jungle Jims in Cincinnati. I knew the Scotch Broth was a Canadian product but did not know that Campbells had a Canadian Pea soup. I usually stock up on the Habitant Pea Soup when we are home in the northeast. It is a Canadian brand and they use lard in it. You can't beat it's flavor

Yeah, Campbell's makes soup in Mexico, which you can often find in Mexican markets. They even carry a couple of varieties in the Mexican foods section of my local Albertson's (which is adjacent to the Mexican district in Oakland and has the largest Mexican food selection I've seen in a mainstream supermarket).
